This is an interactive installation that aims to give the audience a better understanding of the Dong culture. Viewers can place wooden boards in three positions of the installation to trigger different animations, bringing the audience into the rich world of Dong culture.
The Dong people are an ethnic minority in China. Their national language is Dong. They have their own language but no written characters, The total population of Dong people is 3,495,993, mainly distributed in Guizhou Province, Hunan Province, Guangxi Autonomous Region. The local Dong people attach great importance to their own festivals, among which the Jisa Festival, the Dong Festival and the Bullfight Festival are the three main festivals.
Stories Of Festivals:
- Jisa Festival: According to legend, “Sa” in order to defend the safety of Dong village. In a battle with foreign enemies, “Sa” because of being outnumbered, threw herself off the cliff in “Nongtang Gai”, and sacrificed herself heroically. In order to remember her, later generations built a special altar for offering her in the village, and gradually formed a complete set of sacrificial ceremonies and altar management methods. - Dong Festival:
According to legend, the ancestors of the Dong nationality came from afar, originally hunting. After learning to open up the land, they engaged in farming and harvest and they celebrate the fruits from generation to generation after Autumn.
- Bullfight Festival:
According to legend, in ancient times, people planted rice and did not understand transplanting. One day, 2 cows came to fight in the rice paddy. The owner was heartbroken, so he had to move out a little of the seedlings that had not been trampled to replace the damaged seedlings, and did not expect these trasplanted rice fields to reap a good harvest. Since then, people have learned to transplant rice seedlings, and 2 cows fight to commemorate this historic leap in rice cultivation.
